What to wear at a techno club?

Wear whatever you want, as long as it's black.

Techno music is founded on the principle of it being open to everyone without discriminating. It has an anti elitist stance which explains wearing black as it has a history of being the color of the people. The other reason for black is the fact that a lot of techno music has a dark, sci-fi and dystopian feel to it and wearing a black outfit matches that feeling.

The things you need to do to get into a club.

Wearing black clothes distances you from the hyper-commercial EDM "techno" neon outfits, which is in bad taste for an original techno club. So be toned down, too cool to dress up kind of way. Greys and whites can also be added to the mix and when you pick your shoes, make sure you can dance 12 hours straight as the music is the most important.

Techno Kit 001 T-shirt.

Black is a beautiful tone and it gives you the possibility to pair one type of black with another. A great combination is glossy vs matte black. It's one of the reasons we created the Alex Wulf Techno Kit which is a series of black clothes and accessories for a techno night. Things that are useful for a club night, all in black. The beanie will follow shortly. If you are interested in getting one, then write to Alexwulfmusic(a)gmail(.)com

Have a great night!

#191 Berlin - Freak Carneval

I don't believe there is anything in the whole earth that you can't learn in Berlin except the German language. - M.Twain

Berlin is a dirty city and it's filled with all sorts of freaks, that's what makes it interesting. This Saturday we ended up a punk club called Rauchhauskeller. They had the most interesting ticket security feature I have encountered. They painted a nail of the visitor green. People were dancing to the wall of speakers while the techno Dj was behind them. The beer cost an euro and the entrance was 3-5€. We also ventured next door to a strange garden thing. I can't even begin to describe it.

The two of the rarest creatures ever caught on a
photo - an unicorn and a photographer.

From Friday to Monday the Karneval Der Kulturen took place. We made it down on Sunday.  Enjoy the photos of the outfits, cosplay and street fashion. There were endless cars with different groups who identified themselves by their nationality or interests.
People were dancing, mingling and drinking various festive drinks. There were also a selction of local street foods, we went for some Samosas which I had in Barcelona last time. The locals took part by throwing water from their balconies, considering it was 30+ degrees outside, it was a good thing.

The punk club. I was too tired to look for a person
to ask if photos were okay so I just snapped some shots.
Look there's an unicorn.

Next door to the punk club there was the garden party. We had to make our way
through a maze of old cars and wagons and then we saw a surreal stage
with music and old hippies dancing.

The japanese cosplay paraders, who could have just wandered
around freely, instead of being in the rope cage.

Balloons were a must and there were some funny incidents that
I witnessed but couldn't really capture.

There was a popular group of four or five spidermen, one of them had to be the
black spiderman, I guess the shop had run out of the red ones
and he was the last one there.

People were sitting and doing other stuff where ever, no one cared.

Against all odds, this was the guy playing the hardest techno,
with the tibetian girls serving food next to him.

Some people just took their paints with them and painted their friends at the
festival. The guy looking at the camera was pretty much the only one
I asked for a photo.

The Sri Lankans.

It was okay if you forgot your wig, you could buy everything you needed from right there.

Neon was the safest dress code.

On the edge of the festival I discoverd this guy
and dug his style. He is wearing Adidas winged sneakers.

See you next week.

#186 Berlin 1st of May

Kein Bier vor fier

Hey, here's another post from Berlin.

Super hero girl shuffling.

The greatest outdoor party I have witnessed in Berlin was the 1st of May. I didn't quite gather why everyone was partying but I guess in Berlin people take any chance they can get.

Everyone should have a team.

We had been recommended Görlitzer park and that's loosely where we stayed. The Polizei was deployed and the sirens were wailing every ten minutes. We didn't see any rioting except for the time when someone smashed a bottle under the tires of the Polizei van.

Lost ninja turtle.

By accident I managed to come upon a friend from Tallinn, whom I hadn't yet met in Berlin. He told me that he had just come out for breakfast and gone with the flow of the crowd. I asked him for some tips on locations and left with a promise to meet up later.

Accidentally found a friend from Tallinn.

The streets were filled with crowds of people and at times I felt as if I was in a cyberpunk cartoon. There were punks, hippies and any other kind of subcultures you can imagine. From street to street there were different music being played on stages.

Police snipers??

Another cool thing was that Caipirinhas and Mojitos was sold everywhere and there were local men selling it from tubs they had brought from home. It was a strange sight.

Sparkling wine in the park.
As we were informed all of the small shops were we had hoped to get some beer, were turned into tiny bars with music, higher prices and occasionally people dancing.

Spätkauf (corner shop) party.
At some point we had to get a bite to eat and finally settled on a schawarma and of course a döner kebab. All the cafes and bars had improvised benches and tables outside for the occasion. Toilets were in a higher demand and so people just improvised.

Trashed bike.

While filming an old man on ecstasy dancing with a dachshund and then the black kids who were harassing him. One of them confronted me suddenly asking me if I was from the police and why I was filming.

The crowd dancing in the rain.

Otherwise the vibe of it all was positive and liberating and there was a lot of good music on different stages. Everything from rap to experimental performance bands were playing somewhere.

Creepy performance Dj.

The after-hours-man superhero.

As the rain was pouring over the open air crowd, who kept on dancing or took out their umbrellas, we decided to seek shelter inside and headed over to Neukölln.
See you soon

#181 Tallinn Music Week 2014

I listen to Bass and clap in the morning when I don't want to get out of bed

Sending big props to everyone who were a part of this experience for me. The guys from Stockholm, all the Latvians (you were much fun) and the people from Loftas, which already seems like the coolest Lithuanian venue.
Press play and read on.

Tallinn Music Week had me on a sleep diet ~15 hours of sleep during the three festival nights. It was well worth it as I saw good bands and met great people. The track is what the international crowd had to say about my music at the "Check My Demo" panel, where random demos are picked and critiqued.

Toomas Oljum interviews Kerli Kõiv about her road to making it.

Kerli delivered a very refreshing talk at the panel in a very no-nonsense relaxed way. It was truly inspiring and I have much respect for her.

Kerli Kõiv and the press.

Von Kuusk who I very vaguely remember seeing, but I had this photo.
Hanf Kung who weren't wearing caps for some reason.

Hanf Kung - the rap group who made a rap about my home shop.

Ashnikko was the one wearing The Pants at the Hip Hop showcase.

Ashnikko is a USA born female rapper who lives in Latvia. As petite as she is, she managed to take over the whole stage almost singlehandedly with her impressive energy and in your face attitude that reminded me of Uffie. She had the coolest shorts printed with motives from windows 95, which seems to be a hot trend in some Latvian circles. I might talk more of her in the future.

Ashnikko.

Sus Dungo fairy army with two girls still missing from the photo.
Sus Dungo who are 7 beautiful Latvian fairies took my by surprise and instantly. I couldn't believe it, I would usually run the other way when I hear that something folky is coming up. Sus Dungo filled the audience's field of vision with tangible beauty and sonically blasted their audience with a multitude of voices. I wasn't even bothered by the fact that I couldn't understand the Latvian songs.

Sus Dungo's harp which is apparently from Apple.

Badass Yuki hypnotizing set.

Badass Yuki was a force to be reckoned with and my faith got renewed. They filled my head with the "American Man" for my walk back home. Mart Avi was as certain as a Greek statue and Paul Sild was sporting a Batman shirt and bobing around his side of the stage. The chemistry was something otherworldly.

Badass Yuki.

Odd Hugo on Saturday.

Odd Hugo, who was charming as usual, but I can't wait for the next album to come out, luckily they play some of their tracks a little differently in their lives. They inspire me with their sincerity.

Odd Hugo on Friday.

Head over to my Facebook for info about the "Neon Gold" mixtape that is released under Trash Can Dance label today. It's a very limited release and it won't be in any shops, so if you want one then drop me a line.

Neon Gold mixtape.

More news soon!

Tour Estonia 2013

Your rave cleared the harbor of yachts

It would be impossible to tell you of everything that went down in July. However I can share some special moments and good photos with you to enjoy. I'll outline the general route I took.

Patrol the Block was featured on July's MAP as a free download so head on over to get it.

Best light

First we had a party at the North coast at a small yacht harbor. Supapüx soundsystem provided the sound and Tekkamoc Soundsystem played music and did the lighting. It's magical how the setting sun mixed with the different lights. The party lasted until 9am and I played a quick set as well. The staff didn't look too pleased the next morning. Oh well, happens.

3 am jump and phone

One evening we decided to hit the sea. Fabrique gave me a call at around 6 and after we had spent an hour fixing the car that was supposed to take us there we were on our way. We got on the boat at midnight. There was a big full moon guiding us towards the uninhabited island we went for. Two days later we were joined by three more and we had a proper night. I stayed for four days and then headed towards Viljandi Folk festival for the Välk night.

The king of the island

For the second year the area surrounding the stages had an entry fee. Like last year I didn't go in there and the amount of people that were around Viljandi was four times less than two years ago. I'm not sure I will go back next year if it's the same way.

Sexy satan swag at Viljandi Folk

For most of the time we hung around Koidu social house where the Välk event took place. I came straight from the uninhabited island and stayed for the Bassi Missa. The line-up had Heidy Purga, Bert on Beats and Ringo Ringvee with Parmani People at the other stage.

Musicians at Viljandi Välk

The whole vibe was very laid-back and enjoyable. Had some beer with Dj Smaddy on the beach and managed to dodge the cops. The party was wild and packed full not like last year.

Mixer cunnilingus at Viljandi Välk

I had thought of visiting Kuru Plirr as I headed to Viljandi Folk. The plan ripened when I met a friend and she said she also thought of going and her parents could take us there. Next day I met three guys who had the tickets but couldn't be bothered to go. So we were off to Kuru.

Acid at Kuru

We made it there in the night. I had my face painted like a tiger for no apparent reason. The acid-heads didn't like the sight. Two stages were full of techno that lasted until next afternoon with Planet Elva DJs playing a 12 hour set. The festival was well organized and the line up was rich.

Deep thoughts at Kuru

To rest from the vacation I passed by Tartu where at first site nothing was happening. That's usually the best time to take matters into your own hands and organize something. So we got out our table tennis and had friends over during three days to play and compete.

Tired in Tartu

Kukemuru Ambient was next on the list. We went there with Kiwa and Argo Vals. It's the smallest festival I have been to. Over the two days there were around 60 people that came by and the music didn't start before 9pm either day.

I have the berries

The line-up had good performers though. Hendrik Kaljujärv was good and interesting as always, Kiwa got his synth's adapter blown by the faulty generator and so he gave a more techno performance using the drummachines and a Microtribe. We mostly just took it as a weekend trip to the country.

Deep kissing

More photos will be here soon, so come check back.
See you at Tartuff,
